Sports and Victorian England Collide
Behind the scenes look at "Team Names Inspired by Victorian Women"
Hey everyone!
So I decided to write a very silly history-inspired piece using word play. The idea came to me while I was out walking. I can’t stress this enough, get those ideas down immediately or you will forget them. The concept was “team names inspired by Victorian women,” Here is a list of what I came up with.
I knew I wanted to illustrate, so doing all of these wouldn’t have been a smart decision. So I picked 5 and got to work sketching and playing with sentences.
Then it was on to the tablet to transform those sketches into something usable.
Once those were done I transferred them to my computer so I could put them on clothing. But first I wrote a draft of the actual text (jokes) that would go with these illustrations. Remember, it’s a good idea to take some time away from whatever you’re writing. Switching gears after that draft to work on the mockups meant I’d get to look at the draft with fresh eyes afterward. In this case one of my favorite jokes, a take on the famous quote, “Lie back and think of England,” really didn’t come across how I wanted it to. So I cut it.
Finally, I put it all together. I started with a strong section and put what I felt was the weakest section in the middle. Then I ended with my favorite. Flow is something that is specific to each thing you write, but never end or start on the weakest jokes. You want to make people keep reading while also getting a big laugh (or a solid chuckle) at the end. Ideally, don’t have weak jokes. But I felt I did, so it is what it is.
You can see how it came out here!
Thank you for reading!
