Friendship Goals and a Recommendation for Comedy Lovers
Also a glimpse at a creepy pendant that helps me write
Hello everyone!
I’ve got some behind-the-scenes processes and comics coming to you later this week, but today I want to get more personal. Let’s talk about our personal talismans. Many people have objects they associate with others that bring them comfort, joy, and (maybe) luck. This is one of mine.

It’s a painted figure of Sam who is from one of my favorite horror movies, Trick r’ Treat. My long-time friend gifted this to me to commemorate the first movie we watched together. When I’m feeling overwhelmed this is one of the objects I reach for to help ground me and to talk out my ideas with. Yes, it sounds crazy, but it works. And no, it’s never talked back.
This friend and I were improv babies together, learning from the same mentor in college. We were 2 of the four housemates in a house off-campus dubbed, “The Labyrinth,” because of his love of the David Bowie movie and because the house was an insane bit of architecture. He was mellow where as I was always a bit high-strung. I am bad at keeping in touch with people, but he is one of the people I won’t let fade into obscurity.
Back to movies! His love for the art of film and improv are legendary. He has those giant ‘1000 movies you must see before you die” books that many buy but don’t use. Except, he does.
Which is why I highly recommend this video to anyone interested in comedy or film (or both). He describes the concept of “the game” perfectly.

Another reason I’m sharing this is because I’m proud of him for making it. It takes a lot of work to compile the footage, to write, and edit this kind of analysis. In a moment (OK, a week) where I’d been feeling low, drained, and like a creative failure he sent me the link to this. It reminds me of how much we can do when we believe ourselves capable. He had a million reasons not to do the video, and still he did it. He doesn’t care that it’s not yet at the level of our idol, Lindsay Ellis. The joy he had in its making and completion is the same I’m trying to rediscover with my writing. I know I’ll find it. Eventually.
A story you might like:
The Baby-Sitters Club came out on Netflix, and I wrote some super dark humor about their future. Because let’s face it, when those girls grow up they aren’t going to let anyone ruin their monopoly on local childcare.
